Proverbs 7: A Look At Harlotry

originally written 09/07/11

Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” And call understanding your nearest kin, that they may keep you from the immoral woman, from the seductress who flatters with her words. (Proverbs 7:4-5)

KEEP MY WORDS

My son, keep my words, And treasure my commands within you. (Proverbs 7:1)

It takes the word of God and putting it in the right perspective to keep us from the alluring power of the Harlot. God’s Word deserves first place in our lives. Everything we do is to get understanding, to get revelation, to make the truth come alive in our spirit is worth it.

Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding. (Proverbs 4:7)

Understanding is very important, it helps us apply the word. We need to understand the context the word was written in, we need to understand the intent of the scripture, and what did the Father want as a result of what He said.

My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children. (Hosea 4:6)

Without understanding the Lord says “My people perish”(Hosea 4:6) Knowledge (Da`ath) is translated understanding. He continues the verse saying the Lord will reject us if we reject understanding. That is serious. It changes everything about the way we read scripture.

Keep my commands and live, and my law as the apple of your eye. (Proverbs 7:2)

The words “apple of your eye” is the Hebrew word Bath(1323) which means daughter and comes from the word Ben (1121) which means son and builder of the family name and Ben-Hadad (1129)which means build, obtain children, make repair.

Our eyes, what they look at, are important to staying pure and out of the trap of the evil one.

Bind them on your fingers; Write them on the tablet of your heart. (Proverbs 7:3)

The custom of taking a binding to the fingers was a reminder of God’s intervention in delivering the Israelite from Egypt.

The hand-tefillin, or shel yad, is placed on the upper arm, and the strap wrapped around the arm, hand and fingers; while the head-tefillin, or shel rosh, is placed above the forehead. The Torah commands that they should be worn to serve as a “sign” and “remembrance” that God brought the children of Israel out of Egypt.[1]

“as long as the tefillin are on the head and on the arm of a man, he is modest and God-fearing and will not be attracted by hilarity or idle talk; he will have no evil thoughts, but will devote all his thoughts to truth and righteousness.” [2] (Exodus 13:9, 16; Deuteronomy 6:8; 11:18)

It takes more than looking at the things of God…our heart must be alive with the Word; meaning the issues, the well-spring; the flow out of heart needs to be full of the Word and ever before us.

It is significant that the tefillin is placed on the forehead. This part of our brain is where the executive function takes place, where we make decisions. Our decisions should be based on the Word of God, they should line up with the leadership the Father has given us in His Word. Our decisions should reflect the leadership of Jesus Christ, our Lord.

The custom of tying of leather straps on the fingers as a reminder that we must feel the word tangibly – this custom was a physical sensation to draw the heart. How can the word of God in us physically and tangibly draw our eyes to the Lord instead of the allurement of harlotries?

Testimony: Allen Hood, senior leadership at IHOP, was on a ministry trip in Asia with his son and they went downtown for a meal. While walking through the city they saw billboards and advertisements that would be considered porn and in order to keep themselves from looking they would tell one another to look down or to look the opposite way from where the billboard or advertisement was located. This way they would allow their eyes to rest on the images and defile their spirit. It is a perfect example of the ministry of the Father and the ministry of the Son and this true story speaks a strong message to families about the charge of the Lord to keep ourselves pure before the Lord.

Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,” And call understanding your nearest kin, (Proverbs 7:4)

We must have intimacy with understanding and wisdom and lean not upon our own understanding.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; (Proverbs 3:5)

For they call themselves after the holy city, And lean on the God of Israel; The LORD of hosts is His name: (Isaiah 48:2)

THE POWER OF SEDUCTION

That they may keep you from the immoral woman from the seductress who flatters with her words. (Proverbs 7:5)

Harlotry is a seductress. A seducing spirit leads to the harlot of Babylon.

Seductress (NKJV) strange woman (KJV) –  is the Hebrew word Zuwr(2114)  often in Proverbs it is translated as strange woman, prostitute, harlot (meton) it also means to turn aside, to commit adultery to go astray something outside the law of God, a person outside the family and in one instance it is translated as hallucinations from drunkenness.

Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? (Proverbs 23:29)

Those who linger long at the wine, Those who go in search of mixed wine. (Proverbs 23:30)

Do not look on the wine when it is red, When it sparkles in the cup, When it swirls around smoothly; (Proverbs 23:31)

At the last it bites like a serpent, And stings like a viper. (Proverbs 23:32)

Your eyes will see strange things, And your heart will utter perverse things. (Proverbs 23:33)

Yes, you will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, Or like one who lies at the top of the mast, saying: (Proverbs 23:34)

“They have struck me, but I was not hurt; They have beaten me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake, that I may seek another drink?” (Proverbs 23:35)

Flattery is like evangelism for the kingdom of darkness. The word flattery is the Hebrew word chalaq (2505) which means to be smooth, slippery, and deceitful (Qal).

For at the window of my house I looked through my lattice, (Proverbs 7:6)

Eyes are windows to the soul. Our mind will follow what we look at.

“The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. (Matthew 6:22)

But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! (Matthew 6:23)

The curiosity of the soul, the longing for knowledge and the seduction of it when energized by demons or demonic tools of deception, such as lust and greed or power, is very alluring and dangerous.

And saw among the simple, I perceived among the youths, A young man devoid of understanding, (Proverbs 7:7)

We need to dispel the myth of youth being simple and void of understanding. That is not who you are when you are made in the image of Christ. His entire divine nature He had as a man, who walked this earth, is available in your spirit. You are partakers of His divine nature. It is a lie that young people are void of understanding in the kingdom of God.

by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. (2 Peter 1:4)

The message of the spirit of this age is to tear down a generation by telling them they are ignorant instead of telling them who they are in Christ. When we don’t keep the spoken word of God before this generation and instead tell them everything they should not do, like a scolding parent, we actually cause a reaction of defense and release rejection.

Rejection can be a sign of harlotry in a ministry. When we are more concerned about the ministry, the gifts, the crowds and the offerings then we are about the people, Jesus’ Bride, then we release a spirit of rejection.  The Lord told the prophet Hosea to marry a harlot and to name their child “Loruhamah,” meaning, “She is not loved”. (Hosea 1:6) The offspring of harlotry often carries a spirit of rejection.

Today, we find much of this generation searching for strength over the power of this age. The problem is we aren’t witnessing the glory and majesty of Christ to them. Often they find it in an expression of rebellion because that is what the world is displaying.  You may see the fruit in the way they dress. They are testing the boundaries, searching for strength and the devil is glad to give them a feeling of superiority over controlling religion.

We have the most tremendous opportunity to prophesy to this generation who they are, to be a witness of the true image of God that they were created to reflect. Our lives are a clear righteous standard before them which judges the mirage and seduction of the enemies of God and causes them to hate wickedness and love righteousness.

You love righteousness and hate wickedness; Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You With the oil of gladness more than Your companions. (Psalm 45:7)

The evangelistic power of the harlot to a generation promises power and authority without submission to authority.

The spirit of seduction steals understanding by imagery, flattery, and instant gratification

THE PATH OF HARLOTRY

Passing along the street near her corner; And he took the path to her house (Proverbs 7:8)

He took the path. It’s all about choices. The imagery of a street with a corner lets us know there is a “turn”, a leaving of one path to enter another, which leads towards harlotry. Harlotry has a house, has provision, and you can be sure there is money, fame and fortune for the price of your soul.

What is the path? What are the signs? Media and Entertainment are road maps and manuals to this life of harlotry. It is like watching instructional videos to ruin your marriage, have an affair, steal, kill and destroy to have whatever you lust desires. They never tell you the whole story. There aren’t movies and television shows about the rich and famous who have demons that torment night and day, the delusions that bring fear and the reality it can be all gone in less than a day.

In the twilight, in the evening, In the black and dark night. (Proverbs 7:9)

Why would sin be in dark and not light? Sin loves to be hidden that is why the best preventative measure is openness, vulnerability in accountability, and confession. The more you make yourself open to correction and instruction the less opportunity for sin to stay hidden.

The best advice when you are unsure or uncomfortable is to run to the light, ask someone who you trust in the Lord. Don’t ask someone who has the same issue as you do, ask someone who has a strong victory in that area. Stay in accountability relationships that isn’t social but spiritual and when attack comes your way your soul wants to separate, resist that temptation and stay connected.

And there a woman met him, with the attire of a harlot, and a crafty heart. (Proverbs 7:10)

When she (the harlot) comes, our reaction should be hate and displeasure, even a violent opposing reaction rising up out of our spirit.  If this isn’t our reaction than it tells us we have been seduced at some level. We want to ask the Holy Spirit to search us. Once you ask than leave it alone unless you get some prompting, it is easy to go introspective and the enemy will spend all day telling you all your faults. Just shut that down, and declare you who you are in Christ.

Our desire should be to hate sin and everything it does to destroy lives, homes, families, the church, the kingdom of God, and this generation. When we see the destruction than we know that the entrance is just as evil as the habitation

Notice this scripture mentions the “attire of a harlot” There is a powerful allurement in attire. Today’s clothing industry is a powerful evangelistic tool to seduce a generation to ruin their hearts for the true love of God. It is the seduction of the design, not so much the clothes themselves, but the design that reveals parts of your body that are meant for no one to see with the message to the general public…. “you can have this”.

It is not that our bodies are evil but our sin nature is and not everyone is redeemed. With the fall of man came inability to cover our bodies with the glory of God. When Adam and Eve covered their bodies it signified that until we get new redeemed bodies we need to cover ours. This is protection and it is wisdom.

Anytime we reveal or draw attention to something that is usually covered up in clothing the subliminal purpose is to seduce someone to want it and then ask for it. The Lord is looking for a witness of holy and pure living that is exemplified in the inward adorning that reflects in our outward adorning.

There is a seduction of the body through the eyes, the Lord created the make-up of men to be aroused that way, but that is meant for the marriage bed only! If that arousal is taking place anywhere else it needs the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit. The tragedy is that women are putting men through a continual struggle by not considering them when they dress, bend over, brush up against them, etc. The Lord is looking for righteous women of God who will set the standard of holiness and purity and consider our brothers with tender hearts.

This is an industry that needs the voice of prophetic generation that will call them to create clothing that is worthy of their calling.  This lust filled, greed inspired industry needs to find accountability in Godly men and women. We believe God for prophets to be raised up who will confront the iniquity that is blinding a generation.

REBELLION LEADS TO HARLOTRY

She was loud and rebellious; Her feet would not stay at home. (Proverbs 7:11)

The Hebrew word for loud is huwn (1949) which means to murmur, growl, roar, cry aloud, mourn, rage, sound, make noise, tumult, be clamorous, be disquieted, be loud, be moved, be troubled, be in an uproar. A sign of someone needing much attention. People who are loud typically want to draw attention to themselves, they are self centered. They crave attention and they even create chaos to be the center of attention.

Compare the harlot to a virtuous woman found in  Proverbs 31

She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness. (Proverbs 31:26)

Rebellion is the desire of power without submission to authority. When we meet true authority, it is an encounter we never forget and we will never be the same. When we have the power of authority working in us we will judge rebellion by our life of righteousness.

She was loud and rebellious; Her feet would not stay at home. (Proverbs 7:11)

The Hebrew word for rebellious is sarar (5637) and it means to turn away, backsliding, rebellious, revolter, slide back, stubborn, withdrew, like Israel was stubborn and formed alliances with Egypt against God’s ordained plan (Isaiah 30:1) performing improper sacrifices, eating unclean things and worshiping ancestors (Isaiah 65:2) They turned their back on God and His Words (Nehemiah 9:29; Zechariah 7:11) and this means an immoral woman. Rebellion is trying to gain power without submitting to authority.

There is a seduction in the allure of leaving the ministry or church to find something better. We go from church to church, conference to meeting to staying at home, never willing to commit, make covenant and stay planted. This is a sure sign of the harlot of Babylon in Revelation 17.

When you look at how the body of Christ is not planted in a church anymore – watching from home on the internet – not under spiritual authority and how we have catered to that by cultivating a cyber church where no one is in submission, it is a set up of Satan for the Great Harlot (Rev 17-18) Preachers turn to the camera during their sermons and talk to the internet audience like they are under their authority because they want their offerings. We don’t carry our bibles to church, we don’t read them during the day or week and our sermons barely carry scripture in them anymore. It is a serious hour.

At times she was outside, at times in the open square, Lurking at every corner. (Proverbs 7:12)

The Hebrew word for outside is Chuwts (2351)  means to separate, build up a wall, sidestepping (which is the Greek word for iniquity) –A sure sign of the spirit of harlotry is when you are enticed to by someone or something to step outside God given boundaries, whether given by spiritual authority or the laws of the land or even someone’s personal boundaries.  Our respect and honor of these boundaries and not wanting to step outside is not only wisdom it is how we must live out of our spirit.  When we are out from under authority we are not protected. We want accountability, authority which is real freedom. What the world, spirit of this age and harlotry sells is a delusion.

So she caught him and kissed him; With an impudent face she said to him: (Proverbs 7:13)

Another example of this is Joseph who the wife of Pharaoh tried to seduce. Then when he ran she accused him of doing the very sin she was doing. The truth is what was he doing alone with her? We should always want to stay away from even the appearance of evil.

She caught him means he was in the proximity of being so close and sending some type of message he wanted to be caught or flirting with the idea. There is a way to send a message out of our spirit that says we are off limits. We have to know that our souls magnify what is in our spirit and if there is not a spiritual release then our soul magnifies our soulish desires and wants – natural or supernatural – we choose!

The Hebrew word for Kiss is Nashaq (5401)often this word is used for the worship of idols (1 King19:18; Hos 13:2) and some kisses are deceitful (2 Sam 20:9)

This kiss means he didn’t pull away – he lingered – he looked = he made himself available

Impudent is the Hebrew word azaz(5810) means to harden , prevail, be strong, strengthen self. Clearly she felt no remorse, no shame, she rather took pride in her being able to overcome him. The truth behind harlotry is all about power and ruling over another.

VOWS RELEASE KEEPING POWER

I have peace offerings with me; Today I have paid my vows. (Proverbs 7:14)

Offerings enter our hearts into covenant and when we do this with God it releases tremendous power. Interesting to find that temple prostitutes would stand at the gate of the temple hoping to receive the offerings meant for the Lord. –

There is a power release behind the money we spend on our desires just as there is a power release when we spend our money on helping the poor and needy. The sweat of our labor is in finances, we are giving of ourselves and combining it with our worship – with our faith – with the promises of God or with evil, harlotries, and destruction to the soul. It is all about our choices.

Paid my vow, in righteousness this covenant is very powerful before the Lord. In evil it connects the seat of our heart and has grave implications. If we set goals, set tangible reaches for our spirit with agreement in your soul – than these commitments have power to keep us from evil temptations.

So I came out to meet you, Diligently to seek your face, And I have found you. (Proverbs 7:15)

Diligently – the wearing down of the soul with evil consistently is a powerful force of harlotry.  The continual bombardment of images, seducing scenes, compromise in leaders all wears down a soul but on the other hand the strengthening of the soul in spiritual building through consistency is very powerful.

There is a principle of consistency of 40 days can lead to a habit which can then be turned into a lifestyle.  The life of the fly cycle (Beelzebub) is forty days and if you can keep the fly from laying any eggs for forty days then you have killed the mass production of them. The farmers know this and spray pesticides according to the cycle so they don’t mass produce and kill the crop.

I have spread my bed with tapestry, Colored coverings of Egyptian linen. (Proverbs 7:16)

The bed of comfort – the lying down versus standing up –is a position of surrender, she was wanting to lure that man into total surrender, once there he was forever ruined, unable to remove the stain.

I have perfumed my bed With myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon. (Proverbs 7:17)

Perfume – the power of smell is connected to desire – food, perfume, connecting with memories can produce a strong desire.

Myrrh – purpose for purifying yet used in harlotry? The essence of a false anointing and what is releases in your soul – soul power – soul energy in temporary power.

Come, let us take our fill of love until morning; Let us delight ourselves with love. (Proverbs 7:18)

Love (God’s) versus Lust

  1. Love of God: is surrender and death to desires –
  2. Lust of a harlot is to let desire take over and run your life.
  3. Lust says: let lust be filled at the cost of anything including family, relationship, position, ministry – as long as pleasure is number one – the satisfying of pleasure

The power of denial and strength to the spirit – once you begin to train your soul to deny desires you will find delight when you deny your soul and there is no struggle. This training is like an athlete training for a marathon who can go each time run longer distances without feeling the pain in the body responding. We are training for a tribulation – for eternity – so that no matter the test we can overcome every temptation and not struggle because our spirit has the ascendancy.

AUTHORITY IS A COVERING

For my husband is not at home; He has gone on a long journey; (Proverbs 7:19)

Authority is missing – protection is gone – the secrecy of sin – disgust should fill our senses when we see that authority is out of order, a fatherless generation is an alarm – the state of our marriages is an alarm – we are way too complacent over these issues – they should be screaming to our spirit that the harlot of Babylon is set up in our families and marriages – this is the foundation of our nation – it is a pillar in the church

He has taken a bag of money with him, And will come home on the appointed day.” (Proverbs 7:20)

When the head of the house (husband) pursues the allurement of power and of wealth at the cost of family and relationships it sets a precedent for the rest of the family to pursue pleasures at the same cost. It becomes a vicious cycle destroying our families .

Ministry is no different – we have sacrificed our family for the power of ministry and fame – priorities of family over ministry – traveling ministry when family is at risk – local church is at risk – traveling to not face the issues at home or in ministry.

With her enticing speech she caused him to yield, with her flattering lips she seduced him. (Proverbs 7:21)

Seduction – words have power to seduce – We need the discerning of spirits and the power of the separating soul and spirit so that thoughts and intents can be revealed.

Every offer of promotion needs to be examined.

She – Enticed – Flattered – Seduced – that is a pretty clear pattern.

PROVOKED TO SAY YES

Immediately he went after her, as an ox goes to the slaughter, Or as a fool to the correction of the stocks, (Proverbs 7:22)

Provoked to say YES– what is the point of provocation in our souls to sin– hopefully it is getting harder and harder – the lines should move every day – the aggression (what we go through) for desire to be filled is a measuring tool

When you are offered a great seat at a sports arena – what goes through your soul?

When you see a beautiful woman that is not your wife what goes through your soul?

When you see a sale on clothes, cars, homes, jewelry, vacations, can you say NO?

Can you deny? Is power released in your senses, in your soul?

The power of seduction can’t be seen in the beginning…

THE SNARE OF SIN

Till an arrow struck his liver. As a bird hastens to the snare, He did not know it would cost his life. (Proverbs 7:23)

Sin can cost our life. The bird is looking at the food in the trap not seeing the snare around the food, it goes quickly to satisfy its hunger never seeing the danger.

The thoughts of a sinner in the hands of an angry God can keep us off the path of destruction.

Now therefore, listen to me, my children; Pay attention to the words of my mouth: (Proverbs 7:24)

The words from God are full of wisdom. There is so much power on the word to keep us.

There is power to unveil the harlot and all her seductions so we can be aware of all the enemies’ devices. Satan doesn’t want us to talk about it, preach or teach it.

How many messages are there today on the harlot of Babylon? As messengers we need to ask for revelation, ask for messages, ask for anointing, to uncover all the seductions so that this is exposed and sin has no place to hide.

He makes all things that are hidden manifest

Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God. (1 Corinthians 4:5)

Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, Do not stray into her paths; (Proverbs 7:25)

There is a “turn” = you see the path – you see the harlot – don’t “turn” – where is the turning point –  the Lord has to tell you what that turn is – we want to hear about it before it comes up on our path.

Path way of harlotry – don’t be found on it – we can make a resolution in our heart to not be found on the path so that it sends a message to hell we are off limits!

EVIL SEEKS AUTHORITY

For she has cast down many wounded, And all who were slain by her were strong men. (Proverbs 7:26)

She is after the strong – she goes for those that have power and anointing and authority – know this is the battle – set yourself in alignment with authority – be willing to go the extra mile in submission to continually allow the spirit of judgment entrance  – if we judge ourselves we are set free from the assignments of the harlot / enemy

Confirmation of your power in God – if you feel the allurement know that there is something God has deposited in you that the harlot wants – it is not a bad thing to enter in the battle – we have something worth fighting for – He is worth every battle, every sacrifice!

WoundedChalal (2491) it means defilement, perversion like a woman whose virginity has been violated.  We want to be aware of wounds in our souls – they are targets for the enemy. Just declare that my past is off limits! We don’t need to dwell in self pity or be under the power of our past. We can study righteousness and know who we are in Christ so there is no entrance for the enemy we can just close our souls to the enemy.

There is an evil power that longs to overcome the strong and no one is without need in this area. From the greatest to the least we know we are weak, admitting this keeps us from pride and opening ourselves up.  Pride blocks the spirit.

Her house is the way to hell, descending to the chambers of death. (Proverbs 7:27)

Know the end of this path into the house of harlotries is hell. Hell is real. We need to have a reality of hell. We need to be able to talk about hell. NO ONE preaches on hell anymore! We have lost the power of preaching on hell – why?

The doctrine of demons is preaching there is no hell which is a sure symbol of the harlot of Babylon setting herself up in the church.
